President’s Letter

Dear Member:

Over the last several months, with all the changes we’ve seen in our lives, in the community, and in the economy, it can be hard to find any positive news, but it is there. A bright spot in these times is ultralow lending rates.

Rates are at or near historic lows. If you’re looking at buying or refinancing a home, there may not be a better time to do so than now. Depending on your situation, you could be saving a great deal of money on your monthly payment. We’ve partnered with Member Home Loan (MHL) to process our mortgages and the initial response has been overwhelmingly positive. Their experts have been quick to respond to the needs of our members. The MHL team works hard to provide personalized service to make the application and funding process seamless.

As we are all spending more time at home, you may be considering some home improvement projects. You may want to leverage the equity in your home to make those renovations or even pay off debt. You’ll be happy to know that we have products available to assist you. Our Home Equity and Home Improvement loans offer reasonable rates to get you the funds needed to reach your goals.

Through all that we’ve faced, it’s important to find the silver lining in what we have and what we can do. We’ll get through this and in the process, hopefully, we’ll put ourselves and our families in a better position for the future. This could be the step you need and we’re here to help you along the way.

In service I remain,

Bob Glenn

International Credit Union Day

On October 15, 2020, join AFFCU, as we celebrate the 72nd anniversary of International Credit Union (ICU) Day! This year’s theme is “Inspiring hope for a global community.” ICU Day celebrates the spirit of the global credit union movement. The ultimate goal is to raise awareness about the incredible work that credit unions and other financial cooperatives are doing around the world and gives members the opportunity to get more involved in their credit union. ICU Day has been celebrated on the third Thursday of October since 1948.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we’re taking our celebrations virtual this year. AFFCU will be celebrating the day by offering special promotions to our members online. Stay tuned to our social media channels and website in the weeks to come to learn more.

Summer Meals for Kids Comes to a Close

For the seventh consecutive year, AFFCU proudly sponsored the San Antonio Food Bank’s Summer Meals for Kids program, along with KENS 5 and other partner organizations, so that no child went hungry this past summer.

The food drive kicked off on June 15th and ended on August 24th. Throughout the drive, AFFCU kept one goal in mind  ̶  to help collect 12 million meals so the San Antonio Food Bank could provide nutritious meals to children in need. This year’s food drive saw an increased need from children and their families due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. In an effort to protect the health and safety of members and staff, we decided to switch to an online monetary donation format. AFFCU participated in an H-E-B food drive to collect donations from shoppers and our efforts were featured on Great Day SA.

Once again, we had another great summer. Thank you to everyone who participated in the community events and to those who made donations. AFFCU was honored to be a sponsor once again of this great campaign.

Military Saves Virtual Ceremony

AFFCU was recently honored the annual Military Saves Designation of Savings Excellence in a virtual ceremony awarded by Military Saves and hosted by the Defense Credit Union Council. AFFCU received this honor as a result of our participation in Military Saves Month, serving the military community, and striving to motivate our community to build wealth and reduce debt. We were one of only six credit unions to receive this special award. We provided resources to help our members learn best savings practices and financial education throughout the month of April.

DCUC hosted this virtual awards ceremony on August 13, 2020, presenting the six award-winning defense credit unions with the Designation of Savings Excellence, and recognizing us for our individual achievements. DCUC President/CEO Tony Hernandez joined the video call to congratulate this year’s winning credit unions.

Does Your Insurance Cover Your Delivery Gig?

More Americans are utilizing delivery services for everything from takeout to medication to groceries. With this growing need, people may see this as an opportunity to make some extra cash, especially those who are unemployed or have taken a pay cut due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Most auto insurance policies do not cover the business use of your own personal vehicle and many delivery companies, ride-sharing services, and restaurants don’t cover the costs of an accident while you’re shuttling to and from deliveries. That means you might have to pay for medical care and car repairs for both for yourself and anybody else involved in the accident out of your pocket.

Before you hit the road in your vehicle to earn an income, there are some important factors regarding your insurance coverage you may want to consider.

  • Find out if the delivery company has insurance that covers you. Review a copy of the policy to see what type of coverage they may offer.
  • Reach out to your insurance company to see if your current policy covers driving for work.
  • Search for an auto insurance policy that covers your vehicle for business use.

Delivery might be a convenient way to shop, and even earn money, but the cost of an unexpected accident can create a detour in your life.
