President’s Letter

Dear Member:

The last several months have been some of the most interesting times I’ve seen in my lifetime. The world and our country’s response to the Coronavirus has been unprecedented and affected so many facets of our lives—from our jobs and working remotely, to our social lives and how we stay connected to our loved ones while remaining socially distant.

These abrupt changes jumped to the top of everyone’s list and were difficult to prepare for. But we can now look ahead to the “New Normal” and take action by preparing for the future. We can help you prepare for your financial future.

Your credit union has prepared many programs to assist those in need with our Financial Relief programs that includes loan extensions, expanded services and auto loan payment relief. Reach out to us if you need assistance.

As the government prepares for another possible round of stimulus checks and more funds for the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), AFFCU has services that may benefit you. We are an SBA approved lender and many of our savings products, such as the America Saves Club, can help you start saving automatically for emergencies.

Our website also features helpful financial education resources. AFFCU has partnered with EVERFI, a leading educational technology company, which has provided FREE educational modules that cover basic financial foundations to financial planning. There are over 20 modules available to you and we’ll be adding more in September, so please take advantage of it.

This road of uncertainty may go on longer that we can predict. Take the necessary steps to prepare for the journey and know that AFFCU is a resource for you. It’s why we’re here…for you.

Shut Down “Utility Shut-Off” Scammers

Many Americans are having trouble keeping up with their bills due to the COVID-19 pandemic, making them vulnerable to many all-too-common scams.

The National Consumer League, NCL, has recently seen an increase in utility scam complaints, such as scammers posing as local power company representatives threatening to shut off people’s utilities. The only way to avoid this is to pay up immediately, typically via wire transfer or gift card.

We know these calls can be scary. Here are some ways to spot the red flags and protect yourself:

  • Don’t panic– Utility companies in all 50 states have temporarily stopped disconnections during the COVID-19 pandemic. If someone contacts you claiming that they’re about to shut off your electricity, it’s a scam.
  • Contact the power company– A utility company typically contacts customers through all methods of communication to alert you of a possible disconnection. If you feel that a caller is not who they say they are, hang up and contact your electric company.
  • Beware of unusual payment methods– Power companies will not ask you to pay an overdue electric or other utility bills via unusual payment methods, such as wire transfer, gift card, bank-to-bank transfer, or bitcoin.
  • Do not give out personal information– Utility imposters may mention federal assistance programs or payment plans to help you pay overdue bills. All you need to do is “verify” your personal information. In reality, these scammers are trying to gather the information they need to steal your identity.

Support the Summer Meals For Kids Program

AFFCU is in its final month of the San Antonio Food Bank’s Summer Meals for Kids food drive. There’s still time to help fight child hunger in our community.

You can make a monetary donation now through the end of August. Every $1 donated can provide up to 7 meals.
