President’s Letter: Value

In life, there are some things that we hold in high regard because they are so very important to us. We value them more than anything, such as our family, our country and the principles in how we live. There are those items that hold value in themselves, such as our home, and others that are priceless, like our children. Value is what we consider to be the most important and beneficial things in life. It’s not that much different here at the credit union, because we value you.

Your membership means something to the credit union, because as a cooperative, the more you participate, the stronger the credit union becomes. In November 1952, 10 airmen pitched in $5 each to start this credit union. The credit union was valued at $50. Today, there are over 47,000 members/owners of a credit union with an asset size of $430 million. The credit union has increased in value over time because of you.

Many members use the credit union’s products and services because they provide great value. Whether it’s an auto loan or a share certificate, members are more than likely to get some of the best rates in the market. AFFCU provides free services such as Bill Pay and eStatements. We also offer checking accounts tied to many great rewards. There is a great benefit for you being a member of AFFCU.

Truth be told, people are what credit unions value most. AFFCU has worked hard to be out in the community supporting as many worthy organizations and causes as we can. It’s important to us that we collectively make an impact on our community. Mrs. Shirley Jones, a 30-year AFFCU member, relayed her thoughts to me on our involvement.

“It means a lot (AFFCU’s support),” said Mrs. Jones, manager of the African-American Heritage Committee at JBSA-Lackland. “Our organization helps so many military people and their families throughout the year, in fact, our motto is ‘Helping those who serve us’. AFFCU has never turned me down for support. I can always depend on them.”

I encourage you to be engaged in your credit union. As a member, you have something to gain from us. As a credit union, we have something to give to you. A membership here can have a great impact and bring us all value that lasts a lifetime and beyond.

As always, I remain in service to you,

Robert “Bob” Glenn
President/CEO

A Successful End to the Bill’s Elves School Supply Drive

This year, AFFCU saw a need. A need to ensure all children received the supplies necessary to have a great start to the new school year. So, we joined forces with KENS 5 Chief Meteorologist Bill Taylor and the Bill’s Elves project to raise awareness and donations for the children under the care of Child Protective Services (CPS).

Each year, thousands of children in the San Antonio area find themselves in the care of CPS due to abuse or neglect. They can’t rely on the help of parents or families to get them the supplies they need like most children do so AFFCU decided to help.

AFFCU placed donation bins in all of our branch lobbies and AFFCU headquarters from July 23 through August 7 collecting monetary and school supply donations. The Marketing team stationed themselves outside of Whataburger and several local Target stores to collect donations from shoppers, and also participated in the KENS 5 Bill’s Elves Phone Bank.

After a short three week period, over $12,000 was raised in monetary donations and used to purchase additional supplies children needed including school uniforms, undergarments, and shoes. In total, over 17,000 back-to-school items were collected for the children of CPS.

We are beyond grateful for all the efforts made by the AFFCU staff, our members, other sponsors and to all who donated. We thank KENS 5 and Bill Taylor for allowing us to be part of such a great program, and are proud to know that together we have given these children the opportunity for success this school year!

How can we help you succeed?
