President’s Letter: A Different Way of Doing Business

Dear Members:

As we prepare for a change in seasons, welcoming the springtime, we want to make you aware of some of the changes occurring in our branches. There is a new way to do business with us by using our Interactive Member Experience (IMX) offices, something I mentioned in January, and now it’s actually here.

This new method of banking, often referred to as video banking, is a convenient and personal way to do business with us. You simply enter one of our private and secure conference rooms in one of our branches and on the TV screen is a representative centrally located in our headquarters. That individual has the ability to help you with any financial transaction as if they were right in the office.

These individuals running the IMX offices are longtime employees of AFFCU, so they are familiar and friendly faces that will be helping you. Technology has many advantages, but sometimes it can lose that personal touch. This method is as personal as technology can get and we’re providing the same great service you’ve always come to know us by.

By the end of this month, the IMX offices will have been fully installed in all our branches. This is part of our long term plan to bring the credit union up-to-speed with the digital age. We are headed down that road, but we will always be there on the other end to help you out.

As always, I remain in service to you

Robert “Bob” Glenn
President/CEO

Upcoming Events: Youth Month

April is Youth Month and we ask you to join us by teaching our youth the importance of saving and establishing a healthy financial relationship with your credit union.

Not sure how you can help? As a parent, one of the best ways you can start is by opening a savings account for your child. AFFCU has an account for everyone no matter the age!

For kids 12 years and younger, our Coindexter Kid’s account is the one for them. For our teens ages 13-17, they can learn about managing a savings and checking account by opening a free JetSpace Teen account.

It is never too early to start learning about good savings tips and financial habits. Open your child an account today. Plus, look out for more financial savings tips that will be shared on our website and social media throughout the month of April in honor of Youth Month.

Is the Social Security Administration Calling You?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is reporting they have seen an increase in the number of people reporting they have received a fake call from the Social Security Administration (SSA) since January 2018.

Even though the number that appears on your phone call ID may appear to be the real SSA phone number or very close to it, there are still precautions you should take.

The caller will usually say something along the line of:

  • Your Social Security Number (SSN) has been suspended due to suspicious activity and they would like for you to confirm it in order to reactivate it.
  • Your bank account has been seized and the SSA can help keep it safe if you purchase gift cards and give them the codes.

Any of these are scenarios are part of a scam and should be reported to ftc.gov/complaint. The FTC has provided a few tips to remember if you are to receive a call like this so that you do not become a victim to the scam or identity theft.

  • The real SSA will never tell you to send cash, put money on gift cards or to wire money.
  • Never confirm or give your SSN, bank account information, or any other personal information to anyone who contacts you.
  • Your SSN is not about to be suspended and the SSA will not contact you about your bank account being seized.
  • You can always reach out to the SSA by calling their real number at 1-800-772-1213 if you are worried about a call you received.
